I captured and processed this image last February in Death Valley. It is one of my favorites. I was with Harry Sandler during the time. He had processed his image before mine and I really liked how he did it. So without looking at his image again, I proceeded to 'copy' him. After I completed my version, I was surprised to see how differently ours were. What a great lesson.
Yesterday at Harry's gallery opening in Carmel, IN, I was reminded once again of how different they were when I saw his image printed, matted and framed. I actually stared at all 50+ images he had on display. He has always said that it is an image until it is printed and then it becomes a photograph. I finally understood what he meant when I saw each image I had only previously seen on his blog now suddenly have a different life. A life that showed texture and depth unlike the computer screen, iPad or iPhone can portray. It made me long to know more about printing, which Harry so masterfully has crafted.
Printing I believe to be an art form in of itself. Those who are good have spent years doing it. I have a lot to learn about this craft and will get a peek into that world this weekend. Harry and I are teaching an iPhone Photography workshop in Carmel, IN starting today, where Harry will be teaching the importance of resolution, processing for print and actually provide the students with a print of the iPhone processed image on Sunday. I am so excited to start!
