Hiking the Sierra's with my iPhone - Tangled

While trying to decide which image to post today, I came across this lovely scene from the Sierra Nevada mountains. I spend 6 nights in this beautiful range surrounded by high alpine lakes backpacking last summer. What a wonderful way to stay health and feel carefree.

I find it sometimes hard to process detailed landscapes. I usually an happy with just adding a few adjustment with Snapseed. Today however I wanted to try a few apps that I have in my "check it out" folder. I decided Tangled would work well for this scene. This app not only gives a unique look from other apps but the image can be saved up to 12 mp in size. Within the app there are several preset filter choices and then the users can customize from there with a large variety of slider choices from: Stroke Size, Smudge Size and Color Boost to name a few.

As I usually do I used the Tangled layer to blend with.  I then used Artista Oil to create the while framed canvas look. Filterstorm was used to vignette mask two images together. My final step was to use Structure in Snapseed to add sharpening.

Enjoy!

Napa Valley Wineries

Napa Valley with a touch of Autumn

There are about 400 Vineyards in Napa Valley I am told. The few that I visited I enjoyed very much. As I walked past this door I saw the incredible reflection. Being surprised that Northern California was still celebrating the colors of autumn, I had to stop and capture this image.

We should have more information on The Last Pixel Show spring time Napa Valley Destination Workshop in the next couple weeks. An event page on Facebook is being prepared for more information.

Wonderful San Francisco Memories

What a joy it was to spend the afternoon and evening with Tom and Elinor Burnside. Not only did I get treated to wonderful meals and a Christmas concert but they toured me to some of their favorite locations in the San Francisco area. Thank you Tom and Elinor. I had a fantastic time and look forward to visiting with you both in 2012.

Napa Valley Workshop Scouting

Castello di Amorosa - December 2011

The last two days I have been scouting the Napa Valley area for great places to capture iPhone images for The Last-Pixel Show destination workshop. One of my favorite locations has been  the Castello di Amorosa.

Harry Sandler and I will be touring and teaching there during the 2012 Cabernet Season. We hope you can join us. Stay tune for more details on this and other 2012 classroom and destination workshops.

iPhone Photography Workflow

Fly free and be adventurous!
Workflow
Many of the students who take my course seek to have a better understanding of workflow. There are so many apps available for capture and processing of photos but where to start.

When I look at an image I start to see it in the artistic form. One of the first things I need to decide is what layers I need to create. There are my 'go to' apps for layers. You can see by my blog that I use fxPhotoStudio and the Artista series frequently. After those layers are created, I then need to decide if I want to use the app Blender for global blending mode options and/or Filterstorm for more selective brushing and blending.

Usually I will add several elements from many different layers going back and forth from one layer to the other building on it as I go. I sometimes sharpen various layers before adding them. If I need to use the app Touch Retouch I usually do so at the end of my workflow.

The best way for me to learn is to watch others work and -  try try and try again.

I love to do onsite workshops with students because it gives me an opportunity to demonstrate my workflow for the various images I have created. I can more easily explain why I made the choices I did and answer questions along the way. It is most rewarding to share that 'ah ha' moment with a student when something they have been struggling to understand is now clear.

I hope you will treat yourself to a workshop with Harry Sandler and I in the near future.

Bodie Hotel

Pool room
If you ever have a chance to visit Bodie, CA, a Ghost mining town near Mono Lake, GO! It was so much fun to explore. The downside is that it is a State Park that has crazy hours of 9am-6pm, so NO sunrise or sunset images.

This image was captured through the window. It is the inside of the Bodie Hotel. The beauty of the iPhone is that you can press it flat onto the dirty glass and all the reflections disappear.

Hipsta the Ghost

Today was my last full day in Death Valley. This trip was somewhat disappointing if you were hoping for great light. Unfortunately the light was flat and without color for the sunrises and the sunsets. However I still made some of my best images. So it goes to show you that you don't always need the perfect light to create wonderful photographs.
I have spent the last week with Harry Sandler and three new friends, Tom, Michael and David. We spent time together at various locations shooting with a wide variety of different cameras. The part I enjoyed the most however was listening to the table banter. There were conversations about photography of course, music and growing up in New York. I learned a lot and was very grateful to not only be invited but to be very welcome by everyone.
It will be sad to depart tomorrow but I am looking forward to see where the road takes me next!

This image was captured today at Rhyolite when it was a chilly 34 degrees. A multi stitched image Shot with the Hipstamatic camera. I used picGrunger and Filterstorm also to process it.

Rhyolite Bicycle Ghost

The first time I went to Rhyolite 3 years ago. I wasn't very impressed with this so called ghost town. I didn't quite get it. Why would people put this crazy art work out in the dessert? Well I still don't understand quite why, but I do know that I do appreciate it more today. I had a great time playing with the ghosts. (More to come.)

This image is a multiple stitch, captured with ProHDR. I brushed in some water color in PhotoForge. Then I spent about 5 hours iPainting every detail in the image. iPainting is a long process that I really enjoy. As I am moving my finger across the smooth glass of the iPad, I get mesmerized by the patterns and lines. I truly enjoy the process.

I have a few more days in Death Valley and then I think I am heading south. Not sure yet.
Gas prices here just rose again. $5.19 for regular, up from $5.03 on Thursday.

Sandy Garden - Death Valley Dunes

I started my hike into the Death Valley Dunes at 5:45am before sunrise this morning. It was difficult to find a spot that didn't have hundred of foot prints so I could capture my image. So I hiked about 45 minutes until I found the perfect print free, razor sharp dune. However on my hike back to the car, I found this garden oasis. I just loved the 'moon' rocks among the greenery. Death Valley is an amazing place!

The best part of the day was the sunshine and warm weather. I actually put shorts on for the first time in a very long time. It was 72 degrees by 10:30am and reached a high of 78. More sunshine tomorrow and the next day and the next.....

On a side note, if you plan to make a trip here be sure to fuel up prior to your arrival. I think Death Valley may have the highest priced gas in the country. The guy on the bike has the right idea!

I had a wonderful photographic day today. Full of scenery and sunshine. While driving past all this beauty I stop at many pull outs and gawk along the way. I want to soak it all in. So many wonderful places to go and see. I am so fortunate to be able to combine my two passions of travel and photography so often.

iAbandoned Beauty

iAbandoned Beauty
I decided to revisit this beauty last night after I returned home from Vegas. I knew that it would make a great iPainting and I wanted to try out a few new ideas. What I failed to realize was how tired I was. Normally I try to schedule my new blog to post at 1:23am, because that is my favorite number, but I needed more time today.

If you look back a few days to the original Abandoned Beauty you will see the image I used to iPaint with using PhotoForge. After hours of stroking away with my finger along my iPad, I was finally satisfied. Next, I wanted to bring back the aged look of the original so I added some filters in PhotoStudio. The frame came from ArtistaOil, I painted that back in too.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Dante's View Sunset Oil

Death Valley's Dante View

A lucky photographer may only take a picture of a stunning sunset moment; an artist can always make one.
                                                                                                                                                                                   ~ Gina De Gorna

My recent visit to Death Valley was an adventure I will always treasure. I captured and processed some of the best images of my iPhoneography career because of my friend/mentor, Harry Sandler. Harry is a iPhoneography master to whom I am so very grateful continually takes the time to teach me so much.

While sitting on this bluff, I was consumed with capturing all the images I could before the sunset color disappeared. When using ProHDR, each photograph is time consuming due to in app processing. This can be frustrating at times when the colors in the sky are disappearing by the minute. It is because of this limited time I must make choices about how and what I want to capture. Most times I choose to focus on the big picture first and the details later.

I believe it is after the colors fade away that most of the fun begins. Then, I get to decide with all the apps available to me, which direction to process the images. The path I follow is more about what is in my heart then what I originally saw with my eyes. I find that my first approach is rarely the best choice. Most times it is through experimenting with the options I have that leads me the right way. As I stare into the little screen of the iPhone it enlarges to the point where I feel I'm inside of it. It is then that I can begin to create my best work.

Getting Down Low

Devil's Golf Course

I had never been to this part of Death Valley before and was amazed at the patterns of the salted land. An amazing amount of water was in the valley and the sky was incredible making the scene breathtaking. However what I will remember most about this place was the silence. The only occasional sound was of Harry's big boy camera clicking. I love finding place like this in the world that seem so unspoiled by man.

For this image I actually used a small tripod that allowed the iPhone to be only inches from the ground. I wanted to capture the roughness of the land, so close to the crystals of salt.
