Hipstamatic Tintype Pak

I downloaded the TinType with high expectations because of many reviews saying that it was their favorite pak so far. I did like the frame, softness and texture of the images I saw. However the download was a problem at first because it caused Hipstamatic to crash while saving the images. It took diligent closing of the app and restarting the iPhone before the issue was resolved.
However after the frustration I will join the group of positive reviews and say that I really like the TinType Pak.
I asked on Facebook for others to submit some of their favorite TinType images so I could pick a few favorites. Please see below for the ones I liked best.

My Tintype image was captured while my image was being captured by Matt Leitholt with Katie as his assistant. She was holding just about everything!!!

I processed the image using Snapseed.

This afternoon I was sitting at my computer with my iPhone nearby and all of a sudden it sounded like the Hipstamatic App took a photo. A little freaked out by the sound, I glanced down at my phone I saw a notification from Hipstamatic informing me of a FreePak and telling me that IncrediBooth is free also. I smiled thinking how amazing technology is.

I instantly was directed to the app and the New W Mag Pak. It is now downloaded among the 23 films and 24 lenses. So glad that I can refer to the Hipstamatch app to see the incredible amount of combinations I can capture with this camera choice. Yes I do have my favorites, but I never want to miss out on a free Pak and add to my Hipsta collection.

For today's post I decided to use a Hipsta image for the after the notification. I captured this image a few days ago and I haven't had a chance to capture any shots with the new W Mag Pak yet.

I am using the app Snapseed a lot in my processing. In the Tune Image Folder there is the White Balance option. Below I demonstrated how the barn changed from an orange/red to a rich red.

Been a Small Town Girl Tooooo Long

If I have discovered anything in the last few weeks it is that I can't live in my small town anymore. I really have enjoyed the opportunities that being in and near a big city offers. So after my trip to Denver to see family and then to Napa Valley for a workshop with The Last Pixel Show, I am either going to sell or rent my home in Cle Elum. It is a beautiful house on 7 acres where I raised my daughters and it will be difficult to part with but I am LOVIN the social and cultural options of the bigger city.

Tonight I went to the grand opening of ladies night at the Blue Martini in Bellevue and not only listened to great music but had a great conversation with a fellow artist/photographer. So wonderful to discuss passions!

I almost lost it today when I discovered my Limited Addition Hipsta Paks once again would not restore to my new phone. I was so frustrated because this happened last November and I had to rebuy the Retro Pak One and Two because for some reason my iPhone couldn't restore some of my favorites including the popular Dream Canvas.

This time however I was pleasantly surprised to find great help from Hipstamatic. I am so gald they improved their support.

Welcoming in a New Year! 

I had a terrific 2011 full of amazing experiences. All I have to do is look back on my blog posts to see how terrific it was. I have new friends from around the world that I communicate with on a regular basis. The communication may be through wonderful social media options, email, or chat - it doesn't seem to matter how we communicate just as long as we do.

I have traveled far and away this year. Visiting many new places, sleeping in my car, staying in hotels and sleeping in friend's spare rooms. My daughter has brought me to and picked me up from the airport more times then she can count. Thanks Suzanne!

This will be the first time I celebrate the New Year away from home. Hard to image that I will be in Kathmandu, Nepal. I wonder what I did to celebrate? (I am post dating this blog so I don't know what the future brings.) I am sure it was terrific.

I will not be posting much in the next 5 weeks as I will be traveling through different parts of Asia. This is my first trip to this continent. I am excited!!! I packed light so I can move around easily. I am in good hands as my traveling companion, Mark, has traveled to many of the places we will go and is a doctor. Always good to have one nearby.

Hope to see many of you in 2012. You just never know where I will pop up next. Cheers!


This blog post was created by starting with a Hipsta capture using the Dream Canvas film of a white piece of paper. I then used Filterstorm to add the colors in the different tonalities. Next I used WordFoto. I finalized it with a simple frame in fxPhotoStudio.

Ever since I had to restore my old iP4 I have not had the Dream Canvas Film and Salvador lens. So when I heard they were being offered today I bought them again. BTW they are being offered only until Sunday Dec 18th so if you want to purchase either Retro Pak do so NOW!

It is rare that it is ever necessary to buy anything twice through iTunes. My problem was I originally bought Hipstamatic with an old iTunes account and the in app purchases were on a new one.

iPhone Photography - if you can dream it, you can create it!

Times Square one year ago - discovering the possibilities

Remember the days when you had to spend $99 to update Photoshop? and then you had to spend another $99 to update each 'plug in' that you used with it? Well that has all changed, at least for those of us who use applications to process our images. In the last few weeks an amazing number of apps have had incredible updates, free of charge. It truly feels like Christmas and the true spirit of giving.

I remember a short year ago dreaming of the possibility to process my images with opacity brushes, thinking how great it would be to brush and blend this way. Now many applications have that option. Before I even imagined it, I discovered an application that could remove unwanted items similar to the Photoshop's content aware ability for a mere 99 cents. Also a short time ago, I hoped for the possibility of masking with a magic wand and the ability to use layers. Today even that is possible.

Of course there are a few things I still wish for that aren't possible - yet! More ways to make selections would be one of them. I still don't see any marching ants...lol!

I am so excited that the developers have worked hard to create applications that allow us to capture and process amazing images. The possibilities are incredible, inspiring and limitless. I would like to thank them all for helping me become a better artist because of the tools I now can carry in my pocket and will soon be traveling to far and exotic places with. I will continue to dream big, knowing that there is someone hard at work and with the ability to make my dreams come true.

This is beautiful Argyro. She is fairly new to modeling. When asked to look sultry, she appeared puzzled. As the photographer began to explain, she cocked her head at him and said, "I'm Greek I don't understand sultry."
Personally I think she was born understanding.

Annual Birthday Photo

Every year my mom insists on taking my photo on my birthday. I have a collection of well 47 of them. My birthday was last month, my mom and I weren't together to celebrate and I failed to take my photo this year. Of course a few days after my birthday when we were talking on the phone mom asked me if I took the famous photo...I told her the truth.

Today I was getting ready for the day and decided to capture an everyday moment - putting my hair back. So hard to capture an expression that I like on my face. I must have taken 30 images changing the angle, zooming in and out, looking at the camera and away. The biggest difficulty was holding the camera still enough so the image wasn't too blurred. Always something that seems to make a difficult project seem impossible.

I finally captured one I liked. I think my mom will forgive me for being a bit tardy this year.

Hipstamatic - Mix, Match and Blend

During the last iPhone Photography Workshop on Whidbey Island I was on this dock with all these colorful canoes. I took several images of them first with the SlowShutter camera and then with PorHDR. Next I decided to try Hipstamatic using the Blanko film and all the lens choice I purchased. I ended up with several images of different colored boats. I also shot a John S with The BlackKey's B+W (a favorite). Today's blog image is a combo of  John S and BlackKey's B+W and the Lucifer VI. I combined the images in several ways, first in Filterstorm, then with Blender. I also used Snapseed for Structure and Drama!

I was hoping to be able to use FIlterstorm to easily paint in one color but found the tonality of the image to be too similar to do an effective job. So I instead pumped up the saturation and add drama. The two frames came from Hipsta and no where else.

Some days things just look better dressed in blue. fxPhotoStudio has a great filter to add this effect. However as most of you know I am never satisfied with just adding a filter to an image. Next I used Blender. The trick was adding a gradient in Filterstorm and some dramatic light in Snapseed.

Step by Step Instructions to Creating Photo Albums on the iPad with iOS5

While Harry and I were preparing a Slideshow for the workshop we came upon an option that didn't exist until the new iOS5 upgrade, the ability to create albums. Here are step by step instructions on how to 'Add' an Album on the iPad.

While in the Camera Roll album, tap on the 'box with arrow' icon at top right.

Now select all the images you want in the 'New Album' by tapping on them. A blue check mark will appear on all the selected images.

Tap on the 'Add to' icon and then tap on 'Add to New Album'.

Type in the name of the new album and tap return.

The new album will appear at the bottom of all your albums in Photos.

If you tap on the new album 'Fort Casey Lighthouse' you can see the selected images inside. Please note the the images will still appear in the Camera Roll!

While in the 'Fort Casey Lighthouse' album, you can Share, Copy, Remove, Add to...

If you tap ' Remove' you can delete the selected images from this album only, the images will still be in the Camera Roll.  

If while in the Camera Roll you select some images to delete, the images will also be deleted from all the additional albums they were added to.

The ability to create folders is great to move image that you want to keep together. I will find it helpful for processing workflows. It will also be great to have for images that I still want to process. They are also still the same resolution as the Camera Roll images.

However there are some issues that still need to be resolved to make it truly useful for photographers who process images. 

• If you remove all the photos from the Camera Roll the Added Albums will also disappear.
• If you process the images from an album that was created, those images will be saved to the Camera Roll not back into the created album. 
• The added albums can not be backed up to the computer, only the Camera Roll. So you can't save the workflow albums (or other ones you created for any purpose).

iPhone Photography Workflow

Fly free and be adventurous!

Workflow
Many of the students who take my course seek to have a better understanding of workflow. There are so many apps available for capture and processing of photos but where to start.

When I look at an image I start to see it in the artistic form. One of the first things I need to decide is what layers I need to create. There are my 'go to' apps for layers. You can see by my blog that I use fxPhotoStudio and the Artista series frequently. After those layers are created, I then need to decide if I want to use the app Blender for global blending mode options and/or Filterstorm for more selective brushing and blending.

Usually I will add several elements from many different layers going back and forth from one layer to the other building on it as I go. I sometimes sharpen various layers before adding them. If I need to use the app Touch Retouch I usually do so at the end of my workflow.

The best way for me to learn is to watch others work and -  try try and try again.

I love to do onsite workshops with students because it gives me an opportunity to demonstrate my workflow for the various images I have created. I can more easily explain why I made the choices I did and answer questions along the way. It is most rewarding to share that 'ah ha' moment with a student when something they have been struggling to understand is now clear.

Desert Hearts - Intro to Pixel Blend

Something I truly believe and remind myself often is - "A lot can happen in a year!" Last year at this time I was on the east coast by myself traveling in a rental car along the Blue Ridge Parkway. After following the BRP from VA to TN I spent a few days in the Smokey Mountains. It was suppose to be in full autumn splendor but instead the frost had quickly turned the leaves brown. So Instead of capturing the reds, oranges and yellows of Autumn I headed to the coast. My goal was to see the snow geese and walk along the beach.

If you have never seen snow geese take off, fly and land in a flock of 1000 or so, I highly recommend you put it on your list. The sight and sound of it is incredible.

One of the last things I did before leaving the Delaware beaches is to draw a heart in the sand and capture it with the Hipstamatic camera app. Shortly thereafter I processed the image and printed it on canvas as it was one of my favorites.

A year later I am walking along a dry river bed in Utah and found a bright red rock that crumbed in my hand. The crumbs were soft and clay like. I thought of how the Native Americans may have used it as dye or something to draw with. So I drew a heart of red on a sand colored rock and captured it with the Hipstamatic.

Today thinking of my favorite saying, "All you need is Love" I created this image.

I am very fortunate to have so much love in my life and I wanted to express that appreciation!

I was very surprised to see the decor in the Ladies Restroom yesterday. Lucy and Ricky make a great pair!

I have spent the last two days in Starbucks working on class materials and organizing images for a large download. I ca't wait to get out and enjoy the great outdoors tomorrow in Bodie, CA and Mono Lake! Might be a day or two before I blog but the image will be worth the wait! Hummm ghost town or scenic landscape.... stay tuned!
