Long Tail on Koh Lipe

Got up early this morning to take a peek at sunrise. Spent 30 minutes walking the beach capturing the moments of the day. Gave this image a slight vintage look using a Vintage by Jixipix. It has been a good morning.

Tangled Tree is Shined Upon with Love

Somedays more than others your mood goes into creating an image. Today I ended with the warmth of love surrounding me.

The sun shining through is thanks to the app LensLight in the image. My light came in the form of candles being lite by the man I love while soaking in a wonderful warm tub of bubbly water.

I am grateful for recognizing and appreciating that little jester. I will hold it close and allow it, not the negativity in my head, to shine through all day long.

Last Days of Summer

This photo was captured with my iPhone as a self portrait while enjoying the last days of sunny warmth in the Valley of Fire state park. I enjoyed processing it on my iPad with Snapseed, Filterstorm, Moku Hanga, Image Blender and Touch Retouch.

Yes I captured most the the images that day with my Olympus Pen however I must say that I am still an iPhone photographer at heart. It has been 3 years since I took my first serious iPhone photo using the app ProHDR and I am still hooked and enjoying it immensely.

I bought the Olympus Pen because I wanted the option for sharper images and compression with a telephoto lens. Both are available with the new camera and I am sure I have several wonderful images that I took with the Pen but I have only looked at a few and processed a couple since I got it early this summer. However, as usual, I have actively processed and posted many images from my iPhone or iPad to Facebook on a regular basis all summer long.

Why am I not connecting to the Olympus? Simply because it is only a camera without the ability to process and post. As with many photographers I have many things to do other than photography when I return home from a trip. Day to day business needs to get done and processing an image falls at the bottom of the priority list. However many of my iPhone images have been captured, stitched, transferred, processed, posted and backed up instantly. One of my most enjoyable things to do while out shooting is to stitch a HDR image together, process and post it while sitting on a rock still soaking up the view.

As I think about it, even if the Olympus was capable of processing and posting it still would be too bulky to be intimate like the iPhone.

tis the season for a Merry Holiday

tis the season for a Merry Holiday!

I hope everyone is spending time with those they love, respect and trust during this time of the year.

This Christmas is much different than those in the past for me. First of all my mom is far away traveling through the USA with her husband, currently in Texas. Second I didn't decorate my house or a tree this year - first time ever! Third I will be spending Christmas Eve and Christmas Day at my daughter, Suzanne's boyfriends house with his family.

Some traditions I hope to keep: Filling of the stockings with oranges, Santa's sack appearing on Christmas morning, and going to a movie Christmas Day in my pajamas!

iPhone Photography Workflow

Fly free and be adventurous!
Workflow
Many of the students who take my course seek to have a better understanding of workflow. There are so many apps available for capture and processing of photos but where to start.

When I look at an image I start to see it in the artistic form. One of the first things I need to decide is what layers I need to create. There are my 'go to' apps for layers. You can see by my blog that I use fxPhotoStudio and the Artista series frequently. After those layers are created, I then need to decide if I want to use the app Blender for global blending mode options and/or Filterstorm for more selective brushing and blending.

Usually I will add several elements from many different layers going back and forth from one layer to the other building on it as I go. I sometimes sharpen various layers before adding them. If I need to use the app Touch Retouch I usually do so at the end of my workflow.

The best way for me to learn is to watch others work and -  try try and try again.

I love to do onsite workshops with students because it gives me an opportunity to demonstrate my workflow for the various images I have created. I can more easily explain why I made the choices I did and answer questions along the way. It is most rewarding to share that 'ah ha' moment with a student when something they have been struggling to understand is now clear.

I hope you will treat yourself to a workshop with Harry Sandler and I in the near future.

Grungetastic HD Update Review

Taken during our iPhone workshop in Carmel, Indiana
I had a great weekend workshop here in Carmel, Indiana. We a wonderful group of students who have become app lunatics. They were all very creative and had so much enthusiasm. It was incredible to see the students eyes sparkle as they stared at print they had created from an image taken with an iPhone. Harry Sandler expertly taught and demonstrated that the iPhone captures wonderful images and the apped images are amazing photographs when printed.

I captured this image Saturday afternoon in downtown Carmel. I just loved all the statues that lined the streets.

Grungetastic HD has been recently updated. There are so many more options and even more to purchase within the app. If you haven't already updated your copy, be sure to first screen print your preset option settings because you will lose them after update.

Thanks to all the students for attending this workshop. I am planning a return visit in November. Also thank you to Kathleen O'Neil Stevens for all her hard work putting this event together.

B&W - many great app choices

Olympic National Park - on top of Blue Mountain

Vintage Version

Today's image was first processed using Snapseed in color with the Selective Adjustment Points.

Since I was already using Snapseed I decided to first try its Black and White conversion. However when I saw the results on my laptop I didn't like it because I had over saturated and added too much drama.

At this point I could have processed the image again in Snapseed but I decided to instead do some experiments. So I started using other apps to process the same color image into Black and White.

First I used Simply B&W with the yellow and red filters since I liked them the best.

Then I tried Filterstorm B&W without doing any other adjustments. - I found it too flat initially so I  added curve, saturation and contrast adjustments to it.

Next I tried MonoPhix and discovered the app had a significant update since I last used it. I really love the Light Shade Intensity and Dark Shade Intensity sliders for all the color filter options. It is my experience with this update this app has the most control, and I was really liking my outcome.

Then I opened the image in Dynamic Light. Wow! talk about drama...fun! I saved several different versions.

For the vintage looks I processed the image in OldPhotoPro and VintageScene. Both apps created an image I liked.

In the end, I really appreciated having many apps that processed Black and White so well, and I left many out of this experiment that I believe would be equally as good. Having choices is important to me, even though they are overwhelming at times.

Today I wasn't thinking of posting a vintage look so I am leaning toward the more traditional image. However, I am still curious to what image I will pick to post, as I still haven't decided.

Another option is to use a couple of my favorites from the above choices and blend/brush them together...yes that is what I will do... I believe choosing the 'best' is very personal and timely. So today's favorite might not be tomorrow's.... Maybe I'll post two!

An important point to note is that all of the above apps saved the image at the high resolution (5mp).

Change of Scenery

View toward Portland, OR

The photo I posted yesterday was captured as I departed the Palouse near St John. I am amazed how such a major road can have absolutely no traffic on it.
After driving for 5 hours and am now just east of Portland at a friends house. The view toward Portland is incredible. I love watching the sunsets, seeing the evening lights and even observed the fireworks displays throughout the valley during the 4th of July from here.
I am going to try and stay put for a few days and get some much needed updates done.

Iceland Grass Church on the Farm

A common concern my students have when processing images is that they can't always remember which app they used. I try to free them of this issue because I believe the the logical brain and the creative brain are in conflict with such a concern. I would prefer that my students play, create and have fun then worry about which app or app filter was used. It is my thought that if you are too worried about keeping track you aren't freeing yourself to just be the artist.
I do realize that in order to learn you must keep some kind of track of your steps and thoughts so I recommend that my students make quick screen prints of the processes as they go along. It took some time for me to be able to look at an image and know which apps were most likely used, but in time I did.

Today's image is from a farm in Iceland. It was because of images I saw of this farm that I knew I had to go to Iceland. I am so grateful that I got to go. It will be a place I will always long to go back to!

Sub Alpine Trees - Olympic National Park

Another childhood memory I remember from Blue Mountain is smelling the fragrant scent of the sub-alpine tree needles. During this last trip I couldn't resist the opportunity to break off a few needles from the tree, break them apart and inhale the strong smell. It reminds me of a fresh Christmas tree but 10x stronger. ahhhhhh

I am loving this adventure. Sleeping at the top of the mountains is awesome. So grateful that I have a car that is comfortable and reliable for my photo adventures.

This image was processed with Snapseed, ArtistaHaiku, Blender and Impression.

Treasures Along the Road

Just can't pass up a great rusty truck in the woods!
My friend Stan and I went on a fun motorcycle ride up to Mt Rainer National Park. It was gorgeous up there with still 10 feet of snow along the road, however the images were difficult to capture handheld.

On the way back home we stopped at this wonderful roadside attraction, a place some would think was a collection of junk and where I find treasure. When capturing this image I was careful to position the vehicle so I hid all the unwanted items in the background either behind the vehicle or the trees. I find that moving just a few inches right or left and front or back can make a huge difference. These small movements can make or break your image.

The processing workflow on this image included many fxPhotoStudio filters using Blender in a variety of blending modes. I will be creating a handout for the workflow of this image and teaching it in my classes. I also used VintageHD for the frames. As always I used Filterstorm  for final touch up to detail blending and image management, including sharpening.

Life as a Farm Dog

Did someone say "Let's Go!"
I must admit that one of the bast parts about the Palouse is Maddie, the golden retriever. Maddie is the perfect companion. I spent about 6 weeks in the Palouse last summer driving over 2500 miles throughout the county marking all the highlights for photographers to shoot. Maddie toured the county with me. I took her everywhere. She laid down on the floor of the passenger seat, never moving from her spot until we arrived at our destination. Only when we were in the country would she leave the car, refusing to step foot on the asphalt of the city.

Today's blog spot is extra special for me because it represents Maddie as the true farm dog she is. She is always ready to go and this image says it all. I also would like to thank Rod, her owner, for such a memorable summer. Not only was he so generous with his best dog but he was very patient to answer the continuing questions I had about the life of a 3rd generation Palouse farmer.

I will be back time and time again because of Maddie, Rod and so many others that continue to make me feel at home!
