Old Trucks, iPhoneography style by Teri Lou

There once was a girl who liked to take photographs. Little did she know that old trucks would be such an enticing subject. The rust, layers of paint, and years of neglect is what attracted her.
What she didn't realize was how many others knew just how drawn she was to these trucks in fields, backyards and farms.
On more than one occasion when given the opportunity to go on a photo tour with fellow photographers the destination that was picked included the abandoned vehicles she loved so much. This last opportunity, once again, allowed her to practice her craft while surrounded by Ford's of yesteryear.
You can see by the selection, she created an assignment for herself to focus on the details. She picked the inside of the door with the two handles.

First New iPad Processed Image

Volunteer Park Water Tower
Enjoyed processing my first image with the new iPad. It was great to zoom into and see the details I was masking into the image. Sharpening looked really sharp.
This image was captured inside of the water tower in Volunteer Park in Seattle. I had a great day shooting with my new photo friends, Levi Sim and Brook Rieman. Brook was thrilled with ProHDR and Autostitch that I introduced her to. Love sharing the possibilities.

Angkor Wat, Ta Prohm Temple, Cambodia

IR processed Angkor Wat

This location is from the movie, Raiders of the Lost Ark. It is a stitched image that took about an hour to capture since there were so many tourists wanting their photo taken in front of this amazing temple, Ta Prohm.

I processed the image with the DynamicLights IR option because while in the National Museum in Phnom Pehn I saw wall size images of Angkor on the wall processed this way by John McDermott. He has some amazing photographs of the area take a look.

Napa Valley Wineries

Napa Valley with a touch of Autumn

There are about 400 Vineyards in Napa Valley I am told. The few that I visited I enjoyed very much. As I walked past this door I saw the incredible reflection. Being surprised that Northern California was still celebrating the colors of autumn, I had to stop and capture this image.

We should have more information on The Last Pixel Show spring time Napa Valley Destination Workshop in the next couple weeks. An event page on Facebook is being prepared for more information.

Starry Starry Night - with help from Percolator

Twinkle Stars!

Was introduced to a couple new apps that I thought I would try out tonight. I captured this photo while in Chicago. While processing it I thought it looked a little holiday- ish with the happy twinkle stars!  I used lots of apps and processed it on my iPhone. I was actually surprised that I liked it when I saw it on my computer monitor. Sometimes I find iPhone processed images to be muddy.

Smokers Help Prevent Fires

Really?
I am not quite sure how to put the emphasis on this sentence. I guess it depends on the individual.
The building caught my attention because of the great color and that there were vines clinging to it in autumn colors. However when I saw the sign I knew I had my blog post.

Adventure with the Cats

After spending two nights in the Grand Staircase I began to see faces in the rock formations!
The last three days were full of adventure and beauty. As I am typing this I am trying to remember it all. On Saturday morning woke up at 5am to capture the sunrise on the north rim of the Grand Canyon at Cape Royal.
We then traveled to Page, AZ stopping at a few sites along the way including Horseshoe Point. After Page we decided to take the short route that also looked more adventurous because it was a gravel/dirt road from Big Water to Escalante.
As soon as we got off the highway we were treated with amazing rock formations and wonderful dark clouds. About 10 miles into the canyon we looked ahead wondering where the road could  possible go and discovered it was straight up the canyon wall. So fun. The BMW performed wonderfully as we climbed the rocky rutted road. At the top we stopped to take a few photos. I wish we would have on the way up as the car was climbing up a road that would have been hard to walk up.
As we reached the plateau, the sun was about to set and the cloud formations were incredible. We actually pointed our cameras to the sky wanting to just capture the unsettled ocean wave like clouds of steel blue color. (very surreal). That was only the start of the light show. When the sun hit the horizon and then for 30 minutes afterwards, the reds, oranges and yellows danced around us. As we were capturing the beauty in one direction the brillance would appear in another direction. It was a photographers dream.
Even though it was dusk we continued to drive hoping to reach Escalante before bedtime. The road continued to be rough in spots and at times we were crossing river beds some with water, other that were dry. One particular difficult  crossing dipped low quickly into wet sand and rock before entering the river bed. We knew that once we dropped down and crossed the river we would not be able to turn back.
It was dark when we came to a 'T' in the road and the signs said that we would reach Escalante either way. We took the fork to the left and travelled another 45 minutes until we reached a puddle in the middle of the road that look long and deep. Too deep to be stuck in all night long. So we backed up and parked a little off the road finding a place to call home for the night.
The adventure continued in the morning as we once approached the puddle which I now called a lake ( sounded much more dramatic that way). I got my Iphone out and decided this moment had to be video taped. I just knew this was the end of the adventure and would need a tow from a good Samaritan that would hopefully drive by shortly.
As Mark gunned it through the lake, water was spraying everywhere. Somehow I didn't get wet at he flew by. I was laughing so hard as he drove by reaching dry ground. Home free, we would be in Escalante before lunch.
To be continued.....

Benefits of Car Camping

Good Morning World
I have been doing a lot of traveling lately in my BMW X5. I took my first road trip in it to Banff and Jasper National Park, Canada in 2004.
Currently I am in Utah traveling throughout the Southwest looking for photographic locations. The great part of car camping is that I can and do park in wonderful locations. A few mornings ago I woke to this incredible scene.
The best part is that I arrived to this location on BLM land at dark and had no idea that I would be waking up to such an incredible view.
It rained hard yesterday and I spent my day trying to find an wifi hotspot that wasn't packed with people. Finally had to go to St George about 30 minutes from Zion.

Today I am on my way to the Grand Canyon North Rim. Hope to stay connected so I can continue to blog but also looking forward to just enjoying the views that this incredible land provides.

Grungetastic HD Update Review

Taken during our iPhone workshop in Carmel, Indiana
I had a great weekend workshop here in Carmel, Indiana. We a wonderful group of students who have become app lunatics. They were all very creative and had so much enthusiasm. It was incredible to see the students eyes sparkle as they stared at print they had created from an image taken with an iPhone. Harry Sandler expertly taught and demonstrated that the iPhone captures wonderful images and the apped images are amazing photographs when printed.

I captured this image Saturday afternoon in downtown Carmel. I just loved all the statues that lined the streets.

Grungetastic HD has been recently updated. There are so many more options and even more to purchase within the app. If you haven't already updated your copy, be sure to first screen print your preset option settings because you will lose them after update.

Thanks to all the students for attending this workshop. I am planning a return visit in November. Also thank you to Kathleen O'Neil Stevens for all her hard work putting this event together.

Craig Nelson (aka Nephew), age 15. has been driving combines since he was 12.

Tayler Nelson, age 17, has lots of spare time to apply for college scholarships - via her iPhone, while driving truck for harvest!
John, second year college, is responding to Uncle Scott's request on the CB radio. This is his first year farming. He is driving  tractor that is pulling a wagon.

Family values and lots of hard work is important to all of the Nelson family. I had a wonderful time riding in all the different equipment today!

Sharing your Passions with Friends

Michael Pressman and Harry Sandler

Friendship comes in a variety of strengths and lengths. As with everyone, some of my friendships have lasted a lifetime, while others have came and went. This past year I am fortunate to have met many people who share the same passion for photography, iPhoneography, art, travel, nature and adventure as I do. I believe it is important to be surrounded by people who share my passions, believe in me, inspire me and push me to become better. Some of the people I have met this year are incredible friends who do just that and I want to say thanks! I am so grateful and appreciative of the strong bonds I have created!

Mark Hosko
I also include my inspirational students on my new friends list. I am grateful for their desire to learn, their persistance and willingness to play. Each week I am so impressed with the quality and variety of images that are posted by them. Thanks for choosing to take my courses and for the friendship you give to me.

Another type of friendship that I really appreciate is through social networking. I enjoy the photos, posts and comments that are shared so easily and freely. I am fascinated at how small my world has gotten through the ability to communicate with people everywhere. Many times each week I receive a comment, get asked a question or share a 'like' with someone I would never had a chance to know otherwise. I want to thank those friends, you have enhanced my life.

This summer I have been honored and very fortunate to spend a few days photographing with a few of my new friends. I have throughly enjoyed the adventures, the laughing, the learning and the creating together. It has been very rewarding to be able to spend time with them. Thanks again for these special times!

I recommend getting together with friends who share your passions often. I always come home from these experiences more motivated, inspired and refreshed. I am so happy that I have a list of friends that I get to share my life passions with.

My heart warms at the thought that many of my new friends will be added to my lifetime list and that is incredibly awesome!

If you click the name of the photographer under their image you will be sent to a link with some of their photos.

Iceland Grass Church on the Farm

A common concern my students have when processing images is that they can't always remember which app they used. I try to free them of this issue because I believe the the logical brain and the creative brain are in conflict with such a concern. I would prefer that my students play, create and have fun then worry about which app or app filter was used. It is my thought that if you are too worried about keeping track you aren't freeing yourself to just be the artist.
I do realize that in order to learn you must keep some kind of track of your steps and thoughts so I recommend that my students make quick screen prints of the processes as they go along. It took some time for me to be able to look at an image and know which apps were most likely used, but in time I did.

Today's image is from a farm in Iceland. It was because of images I saw of this farm that I knew I had to go to Iceland. I am so grateful that I got to go. It will be a place I will always long to go back to!

Sub Alpine Trees - Olympic National Park

Another childhood memory I remember from Blue Mountain is smelling the fragrant scent of the sub-alpine tree needles. During this last trip I couldn't resist the opportunity to break off a few needles from the tree, break them apart and inhale the strong smell. It reminds me of a fresh Christmas tree but 10x stronger. ahhhhhh

I am loving this adventure. Sleeping at the top of the mountains is awesome. So grateful that I have a car that is comfortable and reliable for my photo adventures.

Old Car Farm in Iceland

Yesterday I posted a panoramic image of the Car Farm and today I processed two of the cars. What a fun place this was. The grass was about knee high and my Muck Boots weren't able to keep my pants dry but that didn't stop me from searching the property for all the cars among the rolling hills.

Along the journey we stopped at many farms wanting to capture an old barn, tractor, grass bails and sometimes just an old structure among the countryside. I found that the farmers were just as friendly and accommodating as the ones I have encountered in the Palouse (in WA, USA). It is incredible that many Icelandic farms have a backdrop of a couple hundred foot waterfall or towering terraced hillsides.

The above image was captured with ProHDR. Processed with Autostitch, Iris, ArtistaHaiku, Blender, fxPhotoStudio, Grungetastic, Filterstorm and DynamicLight. I had the honor of sharing some of processing techniques with Harry Sandler today. Check out his blog for the image he used some of my new ideas on.

The above image was captured with ProHDR. Processed with AutoPainterHD, ArtistaHaiku, PerfectPhoto, Blender, Vignettr, and DynamicLight.

A couple days ago the sun was shining bright and the sky was clear dark blue in the afternoon. We stopped at a farm where I captured many images of the terraced hillside, the pump house, the Icelandic horses and then I climbed as high as I could to get the best view of the waterfall. When I started the climb I had only 4% battery power but it didn't matter if I captured the waterfall with my iPhone, I really wanted the memory, etched in my brain. After I did capture 3 photos the battery went dead and that is when a full rainbow arched across the waterfall in all its glory. Did I photographically miss the moment - yep. Am I bummed - absolutely not! I saw the moment and then I sat down on the terraced mountain, closed my eyes and soaked up the sun. It is important to me to remember to take a breather after I get all those images I so desperately need; it is a journey worthy of my time.

Glorious Morning in Iceland

We were on the road at 4am this morning and saw the sunrising in the sky turning the clouds into beautiful colors, however we hadn't yet arrived at our destination. So we changed our plans and stopped literally right in the middle of the road (no traffic at 4am in Iceland!) and took this incredible reflection in a puddle.
This image was only sharpened in Filterstorm, no other processing necessary. I also am including at the end of this blog a screen shot to show that yes a stitched image from an iPhone is a large size 16mp to be exact. Is it printable? - you bet it is, just as many iPhone images are.

Our day continued to a wonderful lagoon full of icebergs. Some were grounded, some broke apart and floated away right in front of us. I just sat there and watched the amazement of Mother Nature changing the earth right in front of me. Our final stop this morning was at the black sand beach just across the road from the lagoon. This is where the ocean waves once again grounded many of the icebergs that were floating by us. The beach was literally litered  with them.
The above photo is my Icelandic iPhoneography (and big boy camera photography) partners, Harry Sandler and Michael Pressman. It has been a pleasure to travel with them this week. We have shared jokes and created very memorable stories!

This image was captured from the car window because it was raining too hard outside. The fog was low and you couldn't see any of the spectacular mountains or glaciers on the trip to our hotel that day. These buildings are referred to as 'out houses', however they are used to shelter the sheep in the winter time. These particular ones were no longer in use. We were amazed at how they were built right into the rock!

This image was processed with Artista Haiku, Blender and Filterstorm.

The screen print shows the size of the top stitched image. It was stitched with the app AutoStitch on the iPhone.

Rails to Ales - Jumpin Johnny- Hipstamatic Style

Yesterday afternoon and evening I attended the 4th annual 'Rails to Ales Brewfest' in South Cle Elum. Funny thing is I don't like to drink beer. For those of you who think I should give it one more try, I did! It is a flavor I do not like! I do like to dance though! and had my fill yesterday. What a gorgeous day it was.
Jumpin Johnny was one of the bands that played yesterday. Johnny is a great guitarist. I was enjoying being entertained by him when he jumped on a nearby table. Jammin away. I was sitting in the back enjoying the moment when I finally woke up and noticed this great iPhotographic moment. So without further hesitation I rushed over to the edge of the table, squatting down as not to block the view of the other audience members and opened up Hipsta. I pointed the camera and shot just before Johnny jumped off the table. Only able to capture one shot. Bummed I went back to my seat.
Well this story has a great ending because my one and only shot was great! Not only was it in focus but I love the way it is framed and my film and lens chose was perfect. Was I lucky, well yes, I am lucky to have had the opportunity to have countless past hours of practice over the last several years. Yesterday all that practice paid off resulting in an image I am proud to post. Remember practice makes perfect!

Too Many Apps Piling Up?

Thought I would use the today's image on purpose this time to discuss management of photographic apps. Do you find that you have apps piling up all over the place? I do!

As I add apps to my iPhone I am forever wondering where I put them. When they are first installed I can usually find them on the last page. From there I need to decide where to put them.

To manage my photo apps I have three camera folders and (wow) seven processing folders. My processing folders have names such as: Painterly, Fav Processing, Play Processing, Composition/Frames. I try not to move the folders or the apps within the folders around too often or I find they go missing.

If I find that I am just not using an app anymore I will delete it from the iPhone and then change the settings in iTunes not to auto-sync it to the iPhone anymore. If I change my mind at a later date I can always re-check the sync box.

I do rely on the 'Search iPhone' option at times, mostly when I am looking for an app I don't use very often.

I recommend that you keep on top of managing our apps folder structure before you find that they are just piled on top of each other all over the place. Kinda like the pile of wheelbarrows I found in Steven's yard yesterday!
