New Zealand Bush Tour

Farmer Wayne's Tour

New Zealand is full of eye candy around every bend. The rolling hills are full of every shade of green. Reminders of past travels to Hawaii, Chile and Costa Rica are seen within its lush vegetation. While driving I scan the surrounding for scenes that speak to me to capture them.

And so I was positioning my tripod in the perfect location to capture an old building surrounded by trees among the lush grassy hills where cows were roaming, when Wayne drives along the shoulder to tell me that this was his farm. To which I replied, "I love it!"

Wonderfully his response was, "Would you like to take a tour." To which I excitedly responded by following his car into the gate. We then chatted a bit about his farm and how he was going to let me take a nature walk through the bush. He explained that he first needed to move the cows to a new pasture and I was welcome to follow him in my vehicle.
So off we went past some wild sheep - very few are in New Zealand. You can tell because they are brown not white and they will run if they see you approaching. Next we drove through a few gates, up and over grassy hills to where the cattle were.
Wayne proceeded to opened the gate and yelled, "Come On!, come on!" Drawing out the "on." The cows were slow to respond as they positioned themselves closer but not through the gate. "Cone on," he kept repeating and finally one cow stepped through and they all started to follow, mooing loudly and proudly. Most followed the first, but two stepped out of line to which Wayne quickly responded with a confident stride that even cause a bull to back up while in his ready to fight stance. It was quiet impressive. - see Facebook video posting
Next Wayne took me to where I would start my 400m tramp. He explained what I would see and that nothing dangerous is in the New Zealand bush, no snakes. "Or grizzly bears", I added jokingly. Then he explained his idea of giving tours and wanted my opinion. I was honored and anxious to get started.

The tramp started up the grassy field to a gate where I was to go through. Once the gate was closed behind me the path was clearly defined as it was often used as a road. Since I hadn't been in the bush before I took my time embracing the sights and sounds. The plant variety was amazing. Soon I wished more information was provided  - to know their names, did they flower?, produce fruit?, how old were they? do any of them have medicinal qualities?
While continuing to walk the sound of many birds singing their various songs filled the air. Sadly few were visible.  So now I wished to knew what the birds looked like so maybe just maybe I could match them with their melody when I spotted them.

All of the sights and sound were wonderful but nothing prepared me for the beauty in seeing the magnificent 150 year old trees toward the end of the path. I just stood there in awe, while my eyes followed their weathered, wrinkled trunks, to the wonderful broad canopy so high in the sky. Yes I thought, a tour would be wonderful!

After spending time just absorbing the tranquil environment, the photographer in me took out the camera.
Lots of ideas for tours continued to pour out: activities for kids - a treasure hunt perhaps? Can those vines hanging from the trees really be used as Tarzan ropes? What about making a project with plant leaves? And let's not forget a tree hugging photo as long as everyone understands the importance of respecting the elder giants.
In conclusion, I think a tour of the bush for tourists and local school age children would be a wonderful idea. I believe that educating along with fun adventure is always a welcome option. Maybe you will have a chance to visit Wayne too someday.

Old Cle Elum Farm III - iPhone Capture, iPad Processed

As promised here is the painterly version of the Cle Elum Farm. I always struggle with the overly painted to realism. This image has many layers.

Old Cle Elum Farm II - iPhone Capture and iPad Processing

Today I am posting another antique variation of my Cle Elum Farm image. This time I wanted to blend to a subdued color.
The image started in PhotoForge to add texture to the sky. I then blended several PhotoStudio layer versions together to add the frame and texture.
Next time I think I will try a painterly version of this same image.

I have had some wonderful opportunities to share the possibilities of iPad processing with a few friends recently. This afternoon I convinced a non gadget guy to jump in with both feet when he saw how easy it is to mask in Filterstorm. That made me smile!

Farmer's Hired Hand

Meet Dave - Combine Driver

My friend Rod farms wheat and lentils in the Palouse. His hired hand is Dave, a man who understands hard work. Hence the oil stained shirt from repairing the combine that afternoon after a breakdown in the field. Dave was a bit embarrassed not having clean clothes to pose in, I strongly expressed that he looked 'perfect!'

Glorious Morning in the Palouse

Love shining down on the Palouse

Getting up before sunrise is never easy for me. After 7 straight days of waking up at 4:15am to be ready to drive to sunrise by 5am, I was exhausted. However when I am in an incredibly photographic area, I usually am motivated by the possibilities. So on the day after the Palouse workshop Harry Sandler and I once again headed out early and I was very grateful that we did. We ended up stopping every 1/2 mile or so as the light changed and the scenery  continued to amaze until 11am and we were starving.

Missing the Palouse

Rod, my friend and farmer in the Palouse, called tonight to say that the sunset was gorgeous. "There is more pink in the sky than on the inside of a cow. Just wanted to let you know what you were missin'!"
I called him back and said that I do really miss the Palouse but getting his message gave me a great big belly laugh and maybe, just maybe, getting his poetic message was better than being there.

One Reason to go to Iceland - Diversity

Iceland Grass Church on the Farm

A common concern my students have when processing images is that they can't always remember which app they used. I try to free them of this issue because I believe the the logical brain and the creative brain are in conflict with such a concern. I would prefer that my students play, create and have fun then worry about which app or app filter was used. It is my thought that if you are too worried about keeping track you aren't freeing yourself to just be the artist.
I do realize that in order to learn you must keep some kind of track of your steps and thoughts so I recommend that my students make quick screen prints of the processes as they go along. It took some time for me to be able to look at an image and know which apps were most likely used, but in time I did.

Today's image is from a farm in Iceland. It was because of images I saw of this farm that I knew I had to go to Iceland. I am so grateful that I got to go. It will be a place I will always long to go back to!

Infrared, IR, Processed iPhone Image - Palouse

It was about a year ago that I received a phone call from Dewitt Jones. He complimented me on a couple of my Palouse images I had captured with my Nikon last summer. I was honored that he took the time to make the call - it made my day - well I was excited for a long time! He was the first person to purchase my Photographers Map of the Palouse! Now fast forwarding to present.... The last 3 days I had the privilege to show and tour the Palouse in the company of Dewitt and his wonderful wife Lynette.

Following my recommendations we headed out each day to discover what the Palouse had to offer: rolling hills, barns, farms, combines and clothes on the line! We shared in the wonder of the vastness and abundance of the fields of grain. We got our socks full of weed thorns, the car covered in a fine powdery dust and I learned how to take images "Drive by shooting style!"

I learned a lot about the passion, play and love of photography that lasts a lifetime. To share in the endless excitement and willingness to break the rules was very rewarding.

These past few days reinforced that I am on the right track when I encourage 'play' and that by following my passion, not only as a photographer, but as a way of life I can and will continue to inspire and motivate others just as Dewitt and Lynette have done for me.

Today's image is Dewitt's IR - Infrared Recipe for the iPhone, thanks for sharing Dewitt!

Old Car Farm in Iceland

Yesterday I posted a panoramic image of the Car Farm and today I processed two of the cars. What a fun place this was. The grass was about knee high and my Muck Boots weren't able to keep my pants dry but that didn't stop me from searching the property for all the cars among the rolling hills.

Along the journey we stopped at many farms wanting to capture an old barn, tractor, grass bails and sometimes just an old structure among the countryside. I found that the farmers were just as friendly and accommodating as the ones I have encountered in the Palouse (in WA, USA). It is incredible that many Icelandic farms have a backdrop of a couple hundred foot waterfall or towering terraced hillsides.

The above image was captured with ProHDR. Processed with Autostitch, Iris, ArtistaHaiku, Blender, fxPhotoStudio, Grungetastic, Filterstorm and DynamicLight. I had the honor of sharing some of processing techniques with Harry Sandler today. Check out his blog for the image he used some of my new ideas on.

The above image was captured with ProHDR. Processed with AutoPainterHD, ArtistaHaiku, PerfectPhoto, Blender, Vignettr, and DynamicLight.

A couple days ago the sun was shining bright and the sky was clear dark blue in the afternoon. We stopped at a farm where I captured many images of the terraced hillside, the pump house, the Icelandic horses and then I climbed as high as I could to get the best view of the waterfall. When I started the climb I had only 4% battery power but it didn't matter if I captured the waterfall with my iPhone, I really wanted the memory, etched in my brain. After I did capture 3 photos the battery went dead and that is when a full rainbow arched across the waterfall in all its glory. Did I photographically miss the moment - yep. Am I bummed - absolutely not! I saw the moment and then I sat down on the terraced mountain, closed my eyes and soaked up the sun. It is important to me to remember to take a breather after I get all those images I so desperately need; it is a journey worthy of my time.

Iceland - Farms and Country Living

Today I wanted to go back to the glacier and lagoon before sunrise. In order to do that we had to leave at 3am.  At first the guys warned me that they most likely would not be up to join me. But just as I thought I suspect they couldn't stand the fact that I may get a terrific image without them so I saw there smiling faces at 3am.
The sunrise didn't disappoint any of us. The glacier was clear and the icebergs were spectacular. I captured many wonderful images with my iPhone and my Nikon. One thing that can not be done well on the iPhone is to zoom. I needed a zoom lens in order to isolate icebergs better so I used my Nikon.

After shooting icebergs, mountains and glaciers for two hours, I just took the time to sit down and enjoy the moment. It was amazing to watch and listen to the icebergs break apart as I mentioned yesterday. I could have sat there for hours watch the dance of the icebergs. I think it was my favorite place, well at least one of the favorite ;-)

I still haven't processed any of the iceberg images yet. It seems there is so much to do and little time for processing except in the car while moving from one location to the next (and sleep is also required while in the car.)

The above image was captured at a wonderful farm with various cars and tractors scattered about. I will post some of my favorite vehicle sometime. This image was processed using ArtistaVintageHD, Blender, Filterstorm and Bad-Camera

After sunrise we headed to the hotel for breakfast, a shower and packing before the long drive back to Reykjavik. On the way back we stopped at various locations. We are always excited when we stop to photograph so we can get out of the car. Iceland is a vast place that requires lots of driving. Too much sometimes. Oh and another thing I tried today was a hot dog from Iceland. In fact I had two they were so good. They pop when you bite into them and the mustard is of the hot and sweet variety - more sweet. Harry compared them to the Nathan's Famous at Coney Island.

One of my favorite was at this little one room place. It had a bed and TV in it so I am not sure what is it used for. I do think it was crazy cute and we had lots of fun with it. I processed with ToonPaint, (thanks Harry) DynamicLight and Filterstorm. Oh and do you see the face on the house, we have seen them everywhere this week, usually in rocks or mountain faces but this house has one for sure.

One last thing....I am looking out my window and it is still twilight at 11:30 am. the light here never stops!

Churches, Farms and Iceland

Many of the churches in the countryside are right next to a farm. Sometimes the farms are abandoned sometime they look like they should and are not. The pastor used to live on the working farm next to the church, but that isn't common anymore.

Sadly today it rained most of the day. The clouds were low when we went over a wonderfully scenic pass, but couldn't see much at all. It would have been great to have fog instead of low clouds, but no luck.
Ended at a great waterfall where a bride and groom were getting their photo taking in the rain. It was hilarious. Mostly because the paparazzi was also there, my two fellow photography companions. They most likely got a better photo than the hired photographer. lol
I did happen to capture a few images in the morning before the rain.
Heading towards the Glacier tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing the ice in the water, among other things.
BTW I have gotten out my big girl camera. But am enjoying my iPhone very much, especially in the rain!
