Hipstamatic Freebie Friday - Snapseed and Frames

Framed Palouse Barn - Hipsta Style

This afternoon I was sitting at my computer with my iPhone nearby and all of a sudden it sounded like the Hipstamatic App took a photo. A little freaked out by the sound, I glanced down at my phone I saw a notification from Hipstamatic informing me of a FreePak and telling me that IncrediBooth is free also. I smiled thinking how amazing technology is.

I instantly was directed to the app and the New W Mag Pak. It is now downloaded among the 23 films and 24 lenses. So glad that I can refer to the Hipstamatch app to see the incredible amount of combinations I can capture with this camera choice. Yes I do have my favorites, but I never want to miss out on a free Pak and add to my Hipsta collection.

For today's post I decided to use a Hipsta image for the after the notification. I captured this image a few days ago and I haven't had a chance to capture any shots with the new W Mag Pak yet.

I am using the app Snapseed a lot in my processing. In the Tune Image Folder there is the White Balance option. Below I demonstrated how the barn changed from an orange/red to a rich red.

Autumn in Zion

The first sign of Autumn in Zion
Autumn arrived in Zion about 3 weeks late this year. So I only caught the first of the color at the end of my trip. Just before the tunnel, when coming from the east, is a great pull out where the water has craved great grooves into the sandstone. The combo of the red tree and the lines caught my attention. Miss being there...lots!

I spent the evening setting up my apps on my new iPad2. Yes I have been working on the first generation iPad all this time. I just synced it and all seems to be organized as I set it up in iTunes. Now I need to decide if I am going to update my MacBook Pro to Lion so I can start to use the iCloud. Along with that I would need to learn Pages if I want my docs to sync with iCloud. Seems there has been so many changes lately that I have been spending much of my time on updating the devices and learning about all the changes, and not enough time being creative. However I have got a few ideas I have been working on and will share with the students in the Whidbey Workshop next week...I can't wait!

Desert Hearts - Intro to Pixel Blend

Something I truly believe and remind myself often is - "A lot can happen in a year!" Last year at this time I was on the east coast by myself traveling in a rental car along the Blue Ridge Parkway. After following the BRP from VA to TN I spent a few days in the Smokey Mountains. It was suppose to be in full autumn splendor but instead the frost had quickly turned the leaves brown. So Instead of capturing the reds, oranges and yellows of Autumn I headed to the coast. My goal was to see the snow geese and walk along the beach.

If you have never seen snow geese take off, fly and land in a flock of 1000 or so, I highly recommend you put it on your list. The sight and sound of it is incredible.

One of the last things I did before leaving the Delaware beaches is to draw a heart in the sand and capture it with the Hipstamatic camera app. Shortly thereafter I processed the image and printed it on canvas as it was one of my favorites.

A year later I am walking along a dry river bed in Utah and found a bright red rock that crumbed in my hand. The crumbs were soft and clay like. I thought of how the Native Americans may have used it as dye or something to draw with. So I drew a heart of red on a sand colored rock and captured it with the Hipstamatic.

Today thinking of my favorite saying, "All you need is Love" I created this image.

I am very fortunate to have so much love in my life and I wanted to express that appreciation!

I Love Lucy Ladies Restroom Collage
I was very surprised to see the decor in the Ladies Restroom yesterday. Lucy and Ricky make a great pair!

I have spent the last two days in Starbucks working on class materials and organizing images for a large download. I ca't wait to get out and enjoy the great outdoors tomorrow in Bodie, CA and Mono Lake! Might be a day or two before I blog but the image will be worth the wait! Hummm ghost town or scenic landscape.... stay tuned!

Gears and Belts - Palouse

It is incredible the diversity of options the Palouse provides. One morning while we were waiting  for the sun to illuminate a windmill we spent time capturing images of an old piece of machinery. All the gears, rust, patterns and belts.  Who would guess that women could so enjoy and willing choose to capture such things for over an hour.

Toon Paint - Yard Work!

Mowing the lawn!
I am like many others, I really don't enjoy mowing the lawn. So as you can see I let it grow a bit high before I tackled the job for the first time this season. Thank goodness the backyard isn't a thick lawn and more like a play one instead, hence the Volleyball court. However after mowing the lawn, I did enjoy completing the many more tasks of weeding, spraying, sweeping and watering. I have always likes playing in dirt!

I can see that I blended in this border about as good as I mowed the lawn leaving a little white along the upper left edge just like I left a strip of tall grass in places. Oh well I guess it adds to the story!

The Ladder

Add caption
Spent the day on a photo shoot with my friend Steve and his daughter, Sammy in and near Redmond. Steve had done some scouting on his scooter for me. This destination he called Oz, because it had a building that looked like it had fallen from the sky. It was a great location with a terrific red barn that I instantly captured a 6 image stitch of. However when I walked down the hill and found this old ladder leaning against the red barn, I knew I instantly this was the shot.
I enjoyed processing with Sammy tonight. She is a quick learner. I will post her creation tomorrow as we can't seem to make the connection work right now.

Girly Girl

At first I saw the tights, next I saw the shoes and then I became a stealth iPhoneographer. Of course the red coat was the bonus that put it over the top!

I believe it is at moments like this when all my photographic experience comes into play:
I recognized the magic in the possibilities of this image.
I positioned myself to capture it.
I quickly opened the best camera app.
I aimed and shot.

I took a few others but it was the first image that was the best. It was instinct. It was the previous 50,000+ other photos that I took prior that prepared me for this moment. So if you question how can you be a great photographer I offer the following advice: Take lots of images and know your equipment. Have it become an extension of yourself. Only then will you be prepared for when the magic presents itself.

The Red

Boulder, Utah
So I am driving through this spectacular scenery and I come to the small town of Boulder, Utah where there is suppose to be the best restaurant in Utah. Sadly I never found out how good the food really was because it wasn't open for the season just yet (missed it by 5 days). So I will have to return.
I did though find this great photographic 'Country Corner' store that looked as if it had been closed for years. I love the red door and windows, the old snarly trees and the two gas pumps.

I LOVE this:
There is something magical about the iPhone, it’s unlike any other camera in the world! Perhaps it should come with a cautionary label: WARNING: iPhone photography is capable of igniting intense creative passion in users. Creative passion is life altering and irreversible.  ~Emily Bemily

I am in TOTAL agreement! thanks Emily!

Blending Dynamic Light

I was introduced to a new app a few days ago, Dynamic Light. Today I finally had the opportunity to work with it and see how it works. It is relatively simple to use and has the option to save at a high resolution, which is great.

The above image was processed only using Filterstorm. I was able to saturate the colors, add contrast and sharpen the image to my liking. However it still lacked a punch of color that the rocks had when I was taking the photo.

The above image has the app Dynamic Light add to the previously processed image using only Filterstorm. I think this image is too soft and glows a bit much for my liking.

So I decided to finalize the image and chose to layer both images together in Filterstorm, painting in the glow from the rocks and drama in the sky with a low opacity brush to give me a great combination of both.

This image was captured along the Burr Trail near Boulder, Utah.

Zion Sunset

Sadly, I said my goodbyes to my iPhoneography companions this morning. However before I left I was convinced that I needed to change my plans and instead of continuing south towards Joshua Tree, I needed to head east and go to Zion National Park.
This is my first visit here as a photographer. I remember driving through when my daughters were still small enough to be entertained by watching Disney videos on a portable TV. How nice it would have been to have an iPad back then.
I am so grateful to David and Harry for pointing me in this direction and for giving me so much input on all the best places to go. Thanks you two!

This is an image at sunset. I arrived about 30 minutes later then I wanted because I wasn't aware that I had changed to Mountain time.

This image was captured with ProHDR and processed in Filterstorm.

Too Red Barber Chair

Eastern State Penitentiary - The Barber Chair
ESP is a favorite location of mine. The Red Barber Chair is always a treat to shoot. I had spent days thinking about how I was going to uniquely capture it. On the day I arrived I realized the best choice was a vertical pano so I could capture both skylights in the prison cell.  However I never imagined I would be there when a fire broke out, getting this once in a lifetime shot. Never to be captured again.
Well not really, because you see my dad is a retired firefighter and he taught me how to put fires out. So while the iPhone was busy stitching this image together I ran and got the fire extinguisher and put out the flames in no time! So all of you still have the chance to capture this red beauty too when you are Philadelphia next time!!!

Eastern Shore Sunrise - Straight Hipsta

The Delaware Coast

This is simply a sunrise along the Delaware Shoreline captured with the Hipstamatic camera app. A straight shot, crooked horizon and all,  with no processing.  This simple image of a colorful sunrise always seems to capture our hearts. I chose not to complicate this image by adding any processing technique and just show off the power of  the Hipsta app and why so many people fall in love with it.

I hope you have a great morning and a wonderful day!
