Palouse Abandoned House Photography Tour

Palouse Photography Tours with Teri Lou
It was a busy summer and therefore my blogging came to a stand still. My goal for next month is to get back to it! As most of you know who follow my Facebook posts I became a grandma to Brayson John and my youngest daughter was a bride just last week. I also was thrilled to visit the Palouse several times as a tour leader.

Speaking of touring the Palouse... I recently launched a new website that I hope you all choose to follow. I also have a Palouse Meetup group anyone can join and of course a Palouse Facebook page that many of you 'liked' already - thanks much. In other words I am loving everything Palouse! and I get to visit next month since I am leading a private tour - lucky me!

Since I love the Palouse and leading tours I have recently announced 5, yes 5, Palouse tours for 2015. (and as always I am available for private tours all year long). The Shades of Green tour is being offered 3 times since May and June is such a popular time. Then in August I am offering the Abandoned House Tour and the Harvest and Family Farm Tour. Please check them all out since they each have unique opportunities.

Today I am highlighting the Abandoned House Tour since it was just announced and is available to only 4 participants. So I wanted you loyal blog followers to get the first opportunity to sign up. Please contact me if you have any questions.

I call this one Edith's Chair - Palouse Abandoned House

I have captured this chair in many different ways over the last 5 years. Palouse

Treasure in Palouse Abandoned Houses - come tour with me in August.

Teri Lou loves the Palouse - can't wait to visit again!

Storybook Kitchen - Palouse -iPhone Photography

Today while scouting in the Palouse I found a new treasure. Abandonded houses are a favorite of mine. I love opening the door for the first time and peeking inside. I walk gingerly from room to room always hoping to discover some jewel that was left behind.
Today I found that jewel in the kitchen. Not only was the sink and cabinet left behind but the view out the window was pure poetry to me.
So I set my tripod and iPhone in just the right location to frame the little shed just right.
After walking the property a bit longer I sat in my car and processed the image as if I had stepped back in time.

Original capture with ProHDR

Step 1 processed in Snapseed

Step 2 processed in OldPhotoPro

Step 3 blended #1 and #2 with ImageBlender

Step 4 processed in Perfectly Clear and once again in Snapseed.

I'll be here for 5 days this trip. I am a happy girl to be leading two private tours. I'll also be working on my new map and book.

Seeing, Not Just Looking - iPhone Photography

Classic Red Barn in the Palouse

Last week I lead 12 creative and adventurous photographers through a tour of the Palouse. Each of them shot with a dSLR while I continued to shoot with my iPhone. At times, especially on top of Steptoe Butte, I envied their telephoto lenses.

At first I captured this image just to remind me of what the barn looked like at this location, since the barn is just a speck in the field without a telephoto lens! When I arrived back home it somehow made it to my 'to be processed' file. However as I processed it I was annoyed by the triangular clouds and chose not to post it. This morning as I looked through my Photo Library through just waking up blurry eyes, I realized just how much the clouds mimic the triangles in the field and fell in love with the wonderment of Mother Nature one again!

A lesson in seeing instead of looking!

Tangled Tree is Shined Upon with Love

Somedays more than others your mood goes into creating an image. Today I ended with the warmth of love surrounding me.

The sun shining through is thanks to the app LensLight in the image. My light came in the form of candles being lite by the man I love while soaking in a wonderful warm tub of bubbly water.

I am grateful for recognizing and appreciating that little jester. I will hold it close and allow it, not the negativity in my head, to shine through all day long.

Sleeping in the Enchantments

Being in the wilderness is easy, all you have to do is survive!
The camera allows me to share my vision with the world in ways that the memory in my brain can not." ~Teri Lou

Once when I was in my photography booth at an Art Show, I observed a man quietly and intently look at each one of my photographs. After he was done he came up to me and said, "Thank you! I will never be able to travel to the places that you have but because of these photographs I have seen things I would not otherwise been able to." and he walked away. It was a life changing moment for me. I decided at that moment that whenever I had a chance to travel and explore I would always find a way to share the images with others.

iPhone Battery Issue - Shutting Down at 25%

Self Portrait, Volunteer Park, Water Tower, Seattle
I was having issues with the battery on the iPhone 4s I got just a few weeks ago to replace my other 4s. It was totally shutting down when the battery had 25%. I was having the issue before and after the update from 5.0 to 5.1. To try to resolve the issue I went to the Apple Store yesterday after I backed up the phone through iTunes.

Some diagnostics were run on the phone and because there were issues with some standard iPhone installed items I was told they would once again give me a new phone. Yeah, I thought! However, when it was recommended that I don't restore the new phone from an iTunes back up of my old phone I was totally bummed. I knew that this news would require me to re-create all my folders again and when you have 403 apps it is a long boring task.

Since the photos would not be transfered to the new phone because I wasn't restoring, I wanted to make double sure all the images I had on the phone were backed up on my computer. An employee recommended that I use iPhoto so I started asking some questions about the process of backing up this way and discovered that iPhotos file structure wasn't easily read as folders on the computer outside of iPhoto. I also discovered Photo Capture and that it 'dumps' all the images you have on the phone into one folder.

Being most familiar with Lightroom, I chose to use it to back up all my photos for two reasons:  I could understand the folder structure and I could make an additional backup on an external device at the same time.

I had about 6000 images on my phone so I chose to back it up last night and returned to Apple today to get my newest iPhone 4s. Now I will have to make sure all my camera and processing apps are set up again to the highest resolution preferences. I will also need to restore my Hipstamatic purchases, reset my wallpaper images, enter all my wireless passwords...actually it is amazing how many presets you set up on your devices.

I am heading to Denver to see family tomorrow. I will be sitting in seat 30A moving apps into folders for 3 hours or so. At least I can copy the same folder structure I created on my iPad on Sunday. Who says technology saves us time?

The Last Pixel Show will be in Napa Valley, April 5-9 2012. Sign up now! We arrive in the Palouse this August. Please click the images on the sidebar links for more information.

Been a Small Town Girl Tooooo Long

If I have discovered anything in the last few weeks it is that I can't live in my small town anymore. I really have enjoyed the opportunities that being in and near a big city offers. So after my trip to Denver to see family and then to Napa Valley for a workshop with The Last Pixel Show, I am either going to sell or rent my home in Cle Elum. It is a beautiful house on 7 acres where I raised my daughters and it will be difficult to part with but I am LOVIN the social and cultural options of the bigger city.

Tonight I went to the grand opening of ladies night at the Blue Martini in Bellevue and not only listened to great music but had a great conversation with a fellow artist/photographer. So wonderful to discuss passions!

iPhoneographer or just a Photographer

Is it a photograph or iPhoneography? Does it matter?
HDR capture no additional processing.
About a year ago I defined iPhoneography.... now I am rethinking it.

I still think that iPhoneographers capture images with an iPhone and process those images with apps. But what apps? For quite awhile now the apps have been available for the Mac computers. MInd you there are not nearly the variety to choose from, but that will most likely change too. So is iPhoneography include processing on the Mac with apps? I say yes.

My workflow however never has included processing on the Mac. Why? Well I want my workflow to only include apps on the iPhone and the iPad, at this time, because of the simplicity and portability. I say at this time because technology changes so quickly that I can't imagine what new tools will be available a year from now let alone farther into the future.

Just so you know all the images I have ever blogged here have been captured with my iPhone and processed either on my iPhone or iPad with the exception of one image that was captured with my Nikon and processed on my iPad. I NEVER process them on the computer because I want to show that all these possibilities are available WITHOUT a computer.

This workflow fits my lifestyle. I have always been a minimalist as a photographer. I preferred one zoom lens instead of 5 lenses to carry around. I have had the same one tripod for the last 6 years. I don't have a case on my iPhone (mainly it doesn't fit into my tripod holder with one) and I have purchased a few of the gadgets for the iPhone but I never seem to carry them around with me. It works for me, but not everybody.

Not many photographers limit themselves to just the iPhone and iPad as I do. Many of my students process images with their iPad that were taken with their DSLR cameras. I think it is wonderful to have that option available to them. In fact I think more and more photographers will begin to explorer that possibility.

It doesn't matter what your workflow is, what camera took the image, or what device you processed it on. It matters that you are being a photographer. Enjoying the process. Practicing your craft. Growing, living and experiencing.

So go spend some time with your camera today... be a photographer!

BTW Harry Sandler gives his point of view today on his blog. He has a completely different workflow. With our combined thoughts we offer The Last Pixel Show students a wide variety of options to create their art.

Camera Applications for the iPhone - Beyond the Default

Most people who own an iPhone only use the default camera. In today's blog I wanted to highlight three of the several dozen different applications available to take a photo with. Normally I don't get technical in my blog posts but I thought some of this information might be helpful.
ProCamera Application - Bellevue WA

The application ProCamera is my go to camera. It captures a 4:3 aspect ratio.  The above image was taken with it. There are several features included with this camera that the default camera in the iPhones doesn't have.

6x6 Camera Application - Bellevue WA

This image was taken with the application 6x6. It captures a square image - 1:1. Some prefer to use it instead of an application such as Hipstamatic because it provides a 'clean' square image.

Classic Pan Camera Application - Bellevue WA

This image was captured with the application Classic Pan. It captures 9:4 aspect ratio. This application allows you to instantly see in a panoramic view.

This demonstration shows how the same scene looks much different as the aspect ratio changes. Please note that I did move when capturing each image for variety.

Keep in mind that of these three cameras only ProCamera captured a 8mp image. In each of the other two choices the frame was just cropped in camera. In other words you could use ProCamera to capture all of these images and crop the image later during process to achieve the same look.

In the Name of Fashion - Shoes

Orange Spiked High Heels - the shoe of the season!
Went to Bellevue Square Mall today and was extremely surprised when walking through the shoe department in Nordstroms. Granted I have been traveling a lot in the last year and some say I am a country girl, but really...when did shoes start becoming.... impossible to walk in? It was crazy enough when the spiked heals where 5 inches and you were walking on your tippy toes. Now the spikes are 7 inches on platform shoes, so you are now walking on your tiptoes and 2 inches off the ground!!! If you ask me, I woud say Urgent Cares and Emergency Rooms are going to love the revenue from this fashion statement!

When looking at this image I thought the name of these shoes should be "Buckle Up!"

Athletic shoes going electric this season!

Then I had to laugh when I walked into the athletic shoes area. The colors are 'electric'. These shoes have the thinest soles possible. It is like you are walking on the ground practically. I am sure you will feel every pebble you step on. What a contrast!

Filterstorm was used to process these images.

Online courses start again TOMORROW on March 5th. Last day to sign up! Next course starts in April.

So Many Photos, So Little Time

Cape Flattery is the most northwestern point in the contiguous United States. The point is beautiful, rugged and peaceful.
After this trip, like so many others, I find that I have taken so many wonderful images that will never be processed. Today I decided to go back a week in the Camera Roll and found this image.

Sharing my Passion

Swiftwater Cellars, Suncadia, Roslyn WA

What an incredible day I had. It started off by having breakfast at the Swiftwater Cellars in Roslyn, WA and ended with capturing some wonderful photos inside it. Lori Watts, the owner, loves to take photos with her iPhone, and was impressed with my work so she hired me to take some photos. How great is that!

I was also interviewed by my local newspaper, NKC Tribune, here in Cle Elum. The article should be out this Thursday or next Thursday (it is a weekly paper). It was great to share and show Jim, the reporter, the possibilities.

I am hoping to teach a weekend workshop on iPhone Photography and App Processing this winter in the local area. Send me an email if you are interested: teri@terilou.com

The View from 30,000 Feet

Cascade Mountain Range near Leavenworth, WA

On Wednesday when I was flying home from Indianapolis, I woke just in time to see the snow covered Cascade Mountains near Leavenworth Washington. In that particular area is The Enchantments, a group of high alpine lakes, one of my most favorite places on earth.

As the plane flew closer to Seattle the clouds started to gather at the edge of the mountains creating this wonderful white blanket. It was still early so the sun was low and the mountains had this cool blue hue.

Just after I captured this blog posted image, I saw and captured Mt Rainier in the far distance standing tall above the clouds. It was an incredible sight.

SlowShutter Abstract

Morning on the Yakima River

My life is full of adventure that is for sure. I am very fortunate to be able to make my own decisions which include where I am planning to hang my hat each night. Recently I have often chosen to be in the great outdoors. This morning I woke up at the edge of the Yakima River here in my hometown of Cle Elum. When I looked out my car window I saw the morning light glowing on the tall grass creating a wonderful reflection.
So grateful to live in a world that presents so many simple gifts each day!

When processing this image I just couldn't stop. I loved the original image straight out of Hipsta and then I loved the effect with just fxPhotoStudio and TimelessPhoto. But then I wanted to use PencilPaint and AncientCanvas filters to give more color and dimension to the image. Next I had to use Filterstorm to dodge and burn in places. Then I wanted to add more to the rather large white frame,  so that is why I used Grungetastic. At this point I thought it looked terrific until I remembered DynamicLight, so I decided to add a little bit of it too. The art of processing is addicting to me. At times I am like the energizer bunny, I just keep going and going and going....lol!

Lodging and Gasoline

Elk Ridge Lodge 1958

This image was captured at the same location as yesterday's truck. The Lodge and gasoline pump is no longer in service, however the owner proudly displays them and values the treasures of the past. His place was like a outdoor museum of old farming equipement and collectibles of all sorts!

On a side note:
I didn't get the blog up on time yesterday because of a situation at my vacation rental in Hawaii, the battery was dead on the keypad to unlock the front door. I wanted to express how grateful I am to everyone that I called for help to resolve the issue. Each and everyone of you called me back asap. I was honored and proud to have such great friends that responded quickly with suggestions, offers and research. The renters stayed in a friends villa in the same complexand the locksmith is going to return today to resolve the issue. It is amazing how such a simple item, like a dead battery, can create so much drama.
