Step by Step iPhone App Processing

Another image from the Perkin House, Colfax, WA

Today's image was a surprise to me. From the beginning of the processing procedure, I decided I wanted to create an old photo feel, so instantly the app OldPhotoPro came to mind. (As always I sharpened the image first before applying any additional filters.) While finding that app I came across the app PhotoTreats and decided to remind myself to what was available there. I found a filter that super saturated the image and decided to apply it before bringing it into OldPhotoPro.
In OldPhotoPro I tried some various combination and instantly feel in love with the ragged frame. Even though the frame did add the appeal I was looking for I also wanted to continue playing with the possibilities of different framing options so I opened the image in fxPhotoStudio and added a thin black frame. I brought the image into OldPhotoPro again to add the ragged frame to the black portion.
Now with the thought of wanting to paint in the wall paper textureas part of the frame, I also captured that day, I once again added a frame in fxPhotoStudio but this time in white and wider so it would show through when blended in the app Blender.
Each time I processed the image in OldPhotoPro it became more aged and darker. I definitely liked the aged look but thought it was too dark so I used the app DynamicLight to brighten it a bit. Next I sharpened the image again using Perfect Photo. Then I was ready to blend. Using the simplest blending mode app, Blender, I opened the most current version and the wallpaper texture. My plan, as I stated earlier, was to paint the wallpaper just into the frame, however when I chose the multiply option I just loved how the wallpaper blended so well into the whole image - Surprise!
Even though I loved the look on the wallpaper on the image, I didn't want it to be as strong as the portion on the frame so next I opened the image with the blended wallpaper and the one just prior to that in Filterstorm and with a very low opacity brush lightened the inside of the image.
As always I added my copyright watermark with Impression.

This is just a concept that I wanted to share with all of you. It can be used in several ways. I hope this demonstration and explanation motivates and inspires you to see what is possible. I have many more lessons like this in my iCreativity course that is starting Tuesday May 31st.

For the step by step images I used the app Diptic.

iPhone Interior Architectural Photography

Huntley Lodge

"What kind of Photographer are you?" Is a common question I have been asked by many. I used to struggle with the answer to that question because I wasn't exactly sure what kind I was. However about a year ago I decided I was an "opportunist photographer", I would shoot any opportunity that presented itself.
It was in October of last year that I redefined myself as an iPhoneographer. However that didn't change the fact that I will still shoot any opportunity that presents itself. So when I was asked to shoot the interior of a vacation lodge with my iPhone I happily accepted the job.
Actually, I had more confidence shooting with my iPhone because I knew I would not only do a great job but I also knew I would be providing my client with a different look then most photographers. For those of you who follow my blog you know that I am a BIG fan of the Autostitch app. I love how I can create an image that you feel you are actually walking into. Yes Autostitch can and does distort the image but I believe that is part of the appeal.
Case in point is this kitchen interior. While capturing this image I stood fairly close to the counter top on the left and then panned the scene capturing 5 images. Since I am familiar with how Autostitch works, I knew that the counter top to the right would bow in the final result. I also knew that I could use just 4 of the images to stitch with if I didn't like the result. I found that the result of the 5 image stitch provokes thought and surrounded the viewer a bit more than your typical technically correct image. This I find very appealing as did my client. As always it is a matter of choice and in the eye of the beholder. I am curious to hear how others feel about shooting interior architecture knowing that the result is going to most likely have the iPhone Autostitch signature.

Back in Time - Saint Boniface Church - Uniontown, WA

I was very surprised to find this church in the Uniontown, WA. What a treat it was to photograph the inside of it.
This is a 3 image Autostitch, creatively processed using Filterstorm, ArtistaOil and PhotoStudio. If you look closely you will see that the foreground is painted and tinted to give it an antique look whereas the background was kept sharp and brilliant. I chose to process it this way to create the feeling of walking from the past into the preset.

Perkins House - Colfax, WA

The Parlor
The Perkins House is an amazing place in Colfax, WA. My iPhoneographer friend, Dick, and I were treated to a special time there today. Thanks Steve! I captured so many images that my head is spinning today. Here is a very unique version of an image that I saw years ago and couldn't wait to capture myself. It isn't my normal work the high contrast image but it works for me.
I combined two Hipsta images in Blender and finished my work flow in Filterstorm.

I am sure I will be posting other images from not only the Perkins House but also the Palouse for days!

Dynamic Duo - Iris for iPad and Filterstorm

I was at the cafe this evening sitting in a comfortable chair when I saw the sky light up and dramatic clouds, so up I got and off I drove to my favorite yellow truck.
I knew I wanted to once again play with a Hipsta Stitch and I used the whole camera roll shooting this image in 9 frames. When I stitched it I was a little disappointed with the framing edges so I knew I had to be creative.
So where to start. I really wanted to practice and play with Iris for iPad and Filterstorm. What is wonderful about both of them is the power to blend. Both have there own special purpose: Iris is needed to blend at different modes and to add Fx effects whereas Filterstorm is needed to accomplish the task of brushing on the blend.
So I needed to create different versions to blend with. In order to accomplish this I used PhotoForge for one version, PhotoStudio for two of the blends, AutoPainter for one blend and Iris for one blend. However I used some of the blend more than once. All in all I blended 9 times adding different elements each time. I also cloned out some unwanted trees in the background.
My hope is that you realize the power of blending and are motivated to try it for yourself.
I have a feeling you haven't seen the last of this truck!

Two more things:
First of all very few people guessed the apps used in this weeks mystery post and no one guessed correctly, bummer. The apps used were: Bad Camera ArtistaSketch, Blender, Filterstorm, Grungetastic, and Photo Forge. I may have a contest again next week.
Secondly, I wanted to mention that you have one more day to take this month poll - see side panel.

Happy Easter

Straight shot...well kinda

Happy Easter Everyone! I made sure that I posted this on time last night before I fell asleep to keep my daily blogging promise to myself but I barely made it. (I did 9 hours worth of spring yard clean up yesterday and I was totally spent.) What was worse is that when I blog from my iPhone or iPad the image is too small and there is no description, so I am editing the post this morning. Please forgive me for those of you who have faithfully viewed this post already (hopefully you will come back to it again!).
This image was shot last week in Skagit Valley at the RoozenGaarde Gardens. They are famous for their large variety of tulips and mail order around the world. Many displays of varying colors and kinds. The only reason I was able to capture this without people was because I went late in the afternoon and during the midweek. Also I was patient to get the lower half. Worked great to capture in a stitch, when people were in one area I shot in another. Note that you must overlap more than 30% when stitching a Hipsta with a thick border. I also capture one dead center for good measure!

Oz Barn

Oz Barn processed with many apps

Yesterdays post was all about taking many apps and blending them together to create an artistic view. I decided to use that same long list of apps and see how it would look on the Oz Barn in Redmond, WA. This combination of blending and brushing is long but actually doesn't take that much time once you become familiar with the apps and what they are capable of doing. This is just one example of what is possible. As you look at my blog posts you can see that the same app can have many different effects. If you are interested in learning more about increase your own photographic creativity I recommend that you become a student in my iCreativity course. Ask for more information at teri@terilou.com

Cherry Blossoms iPainterly

Spent the day iPainting
Spring is in the air. At least it was on Sunday at the University of Washington in Seattle. The Cherry Blossom trees were in full bloom and crowds were gathered around each and everyone of them. There were brides and grooms, children proudly climbing the branches, unique instruments being played and several groups having a picnic on the lawn. I also must not disclude the 100+ photographers shooting from every direction.
I must admit that even though I wasn't the only one taking photos with their iPhone I was the only one that had it mounted on a tripod. So as usual I gathered a crowd and passionately explained my addiction.

The above image was iPainted using PhotoForge.

The original image is below was captured with the Hipstamatic.

More Relics

Junk Yard Relic - Only 50,000 miles!

I keep going back to the images I captured this afternoon on my way to Portland, OR. The memories of Mr. Relic are fond and etched in my memory forever. He may have a gruff demeanor but his heart is large.
I just finished preparing prints to bring to him later this week since I will be heading south on Saturday for another wonderful photographic road trip.
I think he will be impressed with how well the iPhone captured and processed his Rusty Relics
.

Man's Best Friend

Trying a new technique I learned from a fellow iPhoneographer.  I liked his subject, a beautiful little girl, much better. I, however, only had a close up of this bulldog I captured right outside of my favorite coffee shop in town. I thought he was pretty cute too.

Simply B&W

Glass Museum in Tacoma, WA
I was introduced to a new app yesterday, Photo fx Ultra, designed by The Tiffen Company. It simulates many of the popular Tiffen glass filters, effects and processes. It contains 934 presets, which is a lot of choices. You can layer one effect onto another and even use a masking eraser and brush.

This image was captured with the ProHDR camera and process strictly in the Photo fx Ultra app for the iPad, with the exception of the frame. I layered several choices on top one another in this order:

Polarizing
Glimmerglass
Strip Grad - Magenta
Black and White - Red at 95%
Sharpen
Light Streak
B/W Looks - Flashback

I also added my signature. Can anyone figure out how I did within this app?

The colored version partially processed.

fx PhotoStudio step by step

Sunrise at Hanson Pond

I decided to do something a little different today because I saw that fx PhotoStudio has preset codes you can enter into the app. So I took one of my favorite sunrise photos and added many effects within the app to create a code I will share with you. Something else I am doing differently is posting screen shots of my iPhone to show you exactly which effect I was using and where the slider(s) were for that effect. This way you can also see the changes step by step.

First I opened my image in PhotoStudio. I then tapped on 'fx' at the top and then 'all effects' at the bottom. I applied the effects in this order: 61 Saturation, 104 Rainbow Palette 2, 153 Hot Yellow, 179 Cross Processing 3, 65 Night Vision, 162 Vignette White 1, 170 Photo Border 1, 173 Photo Border 4. The code you can enter into Presets is C64ADC50. Tap 'Presets', '+AddNew' and then 'Enter Preset Code'.

After saving my image I opened it in PerfectPhoto to sharpen and then Impression for my copyright.

I hope you enjoy the results!

If you don't know how to capture a screen shot you will love this helpful hint: Quickly and at the same time press and release the on/off button and the home button. The screen should flash if you have done it correctly. The photos are stored in you album.

Winter Wagon

Winter Wagon

Today I was giving private instruction on Lightroom here in Cle Elum at the clients home. When I arrived I saw two things I instantly wanted to capture with my iPhone. This wagon was one of them. The client wasn't an iPhoneographer and had never seen me at work with the iPhone. He was fascinated at the possibilities. I explained that I was capturing 13 images, would then autostitch them together and continue to process it all on the iPhone. Obviously he was amazed, as I still am!!

This image was extensively processed using many apps and blending their results in Iris. I also used three different texture blends of items I had previously captured with me iPhone. It is common for me to capture concrete floors, peeling paint, rain on a window, etc. to be used later as textures in an image.

Perfect Sledding Hill

Sledding Hill
Winter is upon us. Some places like Texas are colder than usual and the East Coast is expecting to be dumped on again. So I thought I would share what my driveway looks like in Eastern, WA right now.

One my favorite things to do is to go sledding down this perfect 1/3 mile hill. It is even more fun at night, in the pitch black. Every year I have some of my best laughs on this hill. We have several varieties of sleds from simple round disks to large inner tubes covered in durable fabric. We sled as singles and have even made trains of 10 people. Yes the crashes have been dramatic but no one has ever got more than a bruise or two. My wish is that I never get too old to go sledding.
